Common questions and solutions for GBP suspension and recovery issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

How long does the reinstatement process take?

The timeline varies based on complexity:

PhaseDuration
Preparation3-5 days
First Appeal Review1-4 weeks
Second Appeal (if needed)1-4 weeks
Community Escalation (if needed)2+ weeks
Typical Total3-5 weeks

Complex cases in high-risk industries may take longer.

Can I just create a new profile?

No - This Will Backfire

Creating a new profile for a suspended business is against Google's policies. The new profile will also be suspended, and you may face permanent restrictions. Always work to reinstate your original profile.

What's the difference between hard and soft suspension?

TypeProfile Visible?Can Manage?Severity
SoftYes, on MapsNoModerate
HardNo, completely goneNoSevere

Soft suspensions can escalate to hard if not addressed.

What happens to my reviews?

In most cases, when your profile is reinstated, all previous reviews return. They are typically preserved during suspension.

How many appeal attempts do I get?

Officially, you have:

  • 1 initial appeal (via Appeals Tool)
  • 1 additional review (via Additional Review Form)
  • 1 community escalation (via GBP Help Community)

Make each attempt count - don't waste them on incomplete cases.

Google's email was vague. How do I know what I did wrong?

Google's suspension emails are often generic. Common issues are almost always:

  1. Business name has keywords added
  2. Address is ineligible (virtual, PO Box, etc.)
  3. Hours don't match reality or website
  4. Content violations (fake reviews, stock photos)
  5. Recent rapid edits triggered security flags

Use the Suspension Trigger Checklist to audit your profile.

Could a competitor have done this to me?

Yes, it's possible. Anyone can:

  • "Suggest an edit" to your profile
  • Report your profile to Google

If Google's automated system finds something that looks like a violation (even if it's not), it can trigger a suspension. This is unfair but happens.

Protection:

  • Monitor your profile regularly for unauthorized edits
  • Document any patterns of malicious activity
  • Report harassment to Google if persistent

My appeal was denied. Now what?

  1. Don't panic - legitimate businesses often succeed on escalation
  2. Don't resubmit the same appeal - this wastes your chance
  3. Gather NEW evidence - you need proof you didn't submit before
  4. Use the Additional Review Form - not the regular Appeals Tool
  5. Consider video walkthrough - this is powerful evidence

See SOP 005: Handle Denial for the full process.

How do I find my Case ID?

Your Case ID is in the denial email from Google. Search your inbox (including spam) for emails from:

  • googlebusiness-noreply@google.com
  • google-my-business-support@google.com

The Case ID looks like a long alphanumeric string.

The 60-minute timer expired. What now?

If the timer expired before you uploaded evidence:

  • Your appeal was submitted without documents
  • Wait for the decision
  • If denied, use the escalation process with full evidence

Prevention: Always have your ZIP file ready before starting.

I'm getting re-suspended after reinstatement

Common causes:

  1. Made major edits too soon (quiet period violation)
  2. Underlying issue wasn't actually fixed
  3. Competitor reported profile again
  4. Third-party manager caused problems

Action:

  • Re-audit profile using SOP 002
  • Check user access for unauthorized managers
  • Submit new appeal with additional evidence

Industry-Specific Issues

High-Risk Industries

If you're in a high-risk industry, expect:

  • Longer review times
  • Higher evidence requirements
  • More scrutiny on appeals

High-Risk Categories:

  • Locksmiths
  • Plumbers
  • HVAC
  • Garage Door Services
  • Lawyers
  • Bail Bonds
  • Drug Rehab
  • Moving Companies
  • Contractors

Recommendation: Always include Tier 2 and Tier 3 evidence from the start.

Service Area Businesses (SABs)

Common SAB issues:

  • Forgot to hide home address
  • Address shown when it shouldn't be
  • Service areas not properly defined

Solution:

  1. Edit profile to hide street address
  2. Define service areas instead
  3. Ensure any signage/vehicle photos show business branding (not home address)

Error Messages

"Your business profile has been disabled"

This is a hard suspension. Your profile is completely removed from Maps. Follow the full appeal process starting with SOP 001.

"This listing has already been claimed"

This isn't a suspension - it's an ownership dispute. You'll need to:

  1. Request ownership through GBP
  2. Prove your connection to the business
  3. Wait for the current owner to respond or for Google to verify

"We've detected suspicious activity"

This usually means:

  • Too many edits in a short time
  • Login from unusual location
  • Profile changes that triggered security

Solution: Verify your identity and submit appeal with strong documentation.
